Tactical Data Link Basics

The TDL Basics intends to provide the audience in an operational, technical, project, staff, or any other capacity a short view into the Tactical Data Links realm. The course is at an introductory level and will, in approximately 6 hours, cover the purpose of a TDLs, what TDL’s mean to the warfighter, which TDLs exist, the wide spread use within the different armed forces, but also the challenges with regard to interoperability. During the presentation, several operational examples will be provided. Additionally, sessions on various TDLs are provided for a global understanding of the technical specifications, use-cases and operational scenarios. The day will finish with a view into the future and trends with TDLs.

Instructor Bio:

Luc Jochmans:
Luc Jochmans began his Tactical Data Links (TDL) career in 1996 as a Communication Technician on NATO AWACS. He moved from his military role to NATO civilian position in 2007. Since then, he has been a member of the Integrated Multilink Facility, located in the NATO E-3A Component, providing TDL support for NATO. Luc has built up experience as a TDL operator, technician, Link 16 Network designer and instructor. The IMF section of AIRCOM TDLMB is responsible to provide TDL training for NATO, based on the ATDLP 5.55.

Eric van Zanten:
Eric van Zanten started his career in the Netherlands Air Force in Air Battle Management at the CRC ‘Bandbox’. After several operational jobs in Air Surveillance at the CRC, he joined NATO AWACS as a Surveillance controller. Since 2011, he works as a staff officer on Tactical Data Links. Now, at the Joint Tactical Data Links Office, Eric works on variety of TDL-related subjects for the Netherlands Armed Forces. These subjects are ranging from TDL-Standards maintenance, supporting TDL-related modernization and procurement projects to TDL-Policy.

Peter Lamberti:
Peter Lamberti joined the German Air Force in July 1995 and has more than 12 years of experience in international defense organizations. In April 2012, he took up his first NATO position as Project Leader at the Mission Systems Engineering Center (MSEC) of the NATO Airborne Early Warning & Control Force in Geilenkirchen, DEU. In 2014, he moved to the European Military Staff in Brussels, BEL, as a Seconded National Expert in CIS Policy & Requirements. In October 2018, he returned to NATO as a C4ISR & CIS Planner in A6 OPS of NATO Allied Air Command, Ramstein, DEU. The transition to the TDL world took place in April 2022 and he is now Head of the Operations Center (OC) TDL Management Branch (TDLMB) at NATO Allied Air Command. As the incumbent of this position, he is also the NATO TDL Coordination Authority.
